'Crow raid on kites nest'

by Dee Doody
19" x 25"
About the artist:

Dee was born - Diarmid Ewen Cameron Doody but has always been known as Dee. His unconventional name seems to go with his unconventional way of life. Dee Doody was born in Bulawayo, in what was Southern Rhodesia, in 1952 and spent his early years among the vast and dramatic scenery of Africa and its wildlife. He travelled to Britain in the 1960's and, in 1980, settled in Wales with his family of three children, Clare, Kevin and Francisin.

Dee has spent the last nine years working for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in Wales, researching and protecting Birds of Prey, including Merlins, Hen Harriers, Peregrines, Goshawks and Red Kites. For six years, he studied in depth the rare, beautiful and elusive Merlin, a falcon of the high moors, and has spent the last three years working on the equally rare and beautiful Red Kites of Wales. He is a member of the Kite Committee.

Dee produces only a limited number of paintings every year due to the nature of his field work as an ornithologist. Although hard pressed to keep up with works on order, he does exhibit and works a great deal to commission. Dec has exhibited in Cardiff, Caernarfon, St. David's, Builth Wells, Newtown and Betwys-y-Coed in Wales and has held One Man exhibitions at Pen-Bont House in the beautiful Elan Valley. He is known for his detailed work on Birds of Prey and Owls but also paints a wide variety of other subjects as well. Dee now lives and paints in the small village of Y~Fan, an old mining complex, two miles from Llanidloes here in central Wales. His greatest loves are the wild, windswept, heather clad moorlands of Wales and Scotland and its creatures that live, develop and cleave their very specific niches for themselves in that bleak and often hostile environment.

Dee has not only worked on the hills and moors of Wales but also lived for three years in a very remote and unimproved stone cottage on the moors where he began his painting, and often did so by the flickering light of candles and an old diesel generator.

He has visited much of Europe and was lucky enough to have travelled around the world, in his youth, from Australia and New Zealand to Tahiti and Panama.
