Speed comparisons are very hard to make since there are a number of influencing factors - the design of the network, host server speed, international bandwidth constraints etc. but by any standard the modems the majority of us use are far out paced by the new technology
- Dial-up modem - 28 kbps - 56 kbps
- ISDN - 64 kbps - 128 kbps
- ADSL - 512kbps - 2000kbps
- Leased lines - Huge, only limited by cost.
Test the speed of Your connection here
Up to now ISDN has been the only alternative to a dial-up modem before looking at expensive leased lines.
ISDN gives a guaranteed digital speed of up to 128k (dual channel) after a line upgrade.
Now, with a Broadband ADSL line, you could reach download speeds of up to 2000k.
Broadband ADSL is asymmetric which means that different speeds apply for uploading and downloading.
As Broadband ADSL is intended for 'clients' rather than servers, upload speeds - the speed you transmit data - is restricted to 256kbps (kilobits per second), regardless of your download speed.
This should not be of any concern to the majority of users as this is still twice the speed of the fastest possible ISDN connection!
