1) A BT telephone line.

The online checker will give an indication of wether your location is within the distance limitations regarded as having a good chance of receiving service. This is an estimation as in all cases a physical survey of the line quality is required by BT engineers to confirm that service can be received.

3) An ADSL Modem or Router

ADSL modems currently retail from £30 but as in all things there is healthy competition in the market and most ISPs will either supply you with a modem or router free of charge or at additional cost.Those providing free products usually cover themselves with a higher monthly tarrif.

A number of online retailers are also competing to sell you their products.

4) A Micro-Filter for each Phone Socket.

A splitter/microfilter is added to the phone socket of the ADSL enabled phone line. This prevents the broadband signals interfering with the voice signal and visa versa.

If you have more than one phone socket connected to the ADSL enabled phone line then you will need a microfilter for each one.The extra phones can be plugged into the correct socket of the microfilter, the other socket of the extra microfilters, where you would normally attach the modem/router cable, can remain empty.

If you run an extension cable from the microfilter that is attached to the master socket to another phone then you do not need a microfilter at the end of this extension.

The splitter/micro-filter has two sockets, one for the phone cable connection and one for the cable that connects to the ADSL modem or router that you would need to use for this service. Prices of micro-filters vary from £3.95 - £6.95.

Quality of build can be one of the factors for the price differences - this can also make a difference to the quality of your connection too so it generally pays to aim a little higher up the cost scale.
