In recent years the number of kites proven to have died through poisoning in Wales has been lower than in the 1970s and 80s, despite there being many more kites now. Indeed deaths through poisoning in Wales have recently been lower than those reported for the Scottish and English reintroduced populations.
A revival of old ways would be an extremely sad and unnecessary backward step in the progress made towards integrating farming, and other forms of landuse, with conservation.

It is to be hoped that the stiff fines for those caught and the disapproval of the majority of responsible landowners will continue to reduce the number of deaths through this illegal and selfish practise.

If you find a dead kite...

It is vitally important that any dead kites found are reported to either The Welsh Kite Trust, the RSPB or MAFF/ADAS IMMEDIATELY so that they can be rapidly collected and taken to a Veterinary Investigation Centre for a post-mortem examination. Particularly in the summer birds rapidly decompose beyond the point where PM examinations are possible. Speed is therefore essential.

 If there are no suspicious circumstances and you have access to a plastic bag or other container please collect the bird and store it in a cool place, preferably a fridge - do not freeze if possible as this can effect later tests. until it can be collected.

 If there is a possible bait nearby - a dead lamb, rabbit or pheasant for example - or other dead birds present then it is especially important that you do not touch anything with your bare hands.

Some of the poisons currently being misused are deadly to humans as well as birds.

Please make a careful note of any rings or tags present, including the position (i.e. right leg, left wing etc.), the colour and any numbers or letters present. If you have a camera with you please try to photograph the bird and the immediate area around.

 If possible cover any baits or dead animals (to avoid further deaths).

 Notify someone immediately of your findings.

Poisoning is an extremely serious offence with fines of up to £5,000 for each animal harmed and the possibility of a prison sentence.
