The dramatic rescue of a red kite has taken place at Gigrin Farm, Rhayader. Tony Cross - the welsh kite trust project officer - was called in from his New Years day lunch to climb a large Oak tree from which hung a red kite. The bird had somehow become entangled in plastic binder twine and now hung precariously from a branch by it's left wing. Tony climbed the tree, removed the string and after a quick examination brought the kite down to earth. The bird has now been transferred to the Red Kite Rehabilitation centre which as it happens is situated at Gigrin Farm. The kite had been spotted by visitors to the kite feeding and as there was then a short time lag between my being alerted and Tony's arrival the video camera was brought into action.. screen grabs follow. The camera was put down at this stage as Tony was on his way back down the tree with only one hand free. I shouldn't have worried as he is well versed with tree climbing due to the work with ringing etc. The pictures on the right are of the kite immediatly on arrival at the rehabilitation aviary.
