Kitewatchers are based in the heart of “Kite Country” in mid Wales – a landscape of open heather and grass moorland, ancient hanging oak woods and traditional hill farmland with its mosaic of hedgerows and stonewalls bounding wet rhos pastures and flower-rich hay meadows. Here the tumbling waters of the Rivers Claerwen and Elan pass through the Elan Valley, described as the Lakeland of Wales, before flowing into the spectacular River Wye.

Kitewatchers Wildlife Breaks are run by husband and wife team, Richard and Pam Knight. They offer ideal opportunities for beginners to learn more and provide excellent wildlife encounters for all birdwatchers and naturalists – looking at the richness and diversity of wildlife, observing closely the birds and other animals and plants and learning about their identification, habits and habitats. None of the excursions are arduous, the longest walks being no more than a mile or two at most and always at a leisurely pace in order to observe things along the way.

Richard is very well qualified as leader of all the breaks, having worked for over 25 years as a nature reserve warden. He has been warden of the RSPB Carngafallt Reserve here in mid Wales since 1986 and it was in 1995, when this became a part-time post, that Richard and Pam decided to develop these special wildlife breaks. An accomplished all round field naturalist, Richard’s intimate knowledge and enthusiasm for the wildlife and countryside on his own patch are complemented by an ability to share his knowledge and experience in a very professional, relaxed, patient and unhurried manner.

In addition to breaks in Kite Country, occasional day or half day excursions can be arranged for small groups or individuals and each year there are holidays further afield which explore the landscape and wildlife in other areas of the British Isles.

Richard and Pam also manage their own small but exceptional nature reserve with a boardwalk trail and for anyone wishing to stay on their doorstep there is the Kitewatchers Cottage, a self-catering cottage for two in delightful surroundings.
